MADIKWE GAME RESERVE
Set on the edge of the Kalahari and stretching across vast, untamed wilderness, Madikwe Game Reserve is one of South Africa’s best-kept safari secrets — a true hidden gem and one of the continent’s most remarkable conservation success stories. Spanning approximately 680 km² (expanding to 750 km² with incorporated private land), it is the fifth-largest game reserve in the country and offers an exclusive Big Five safari experience far from the crowds of more commercial parks.
Located roughly 90 kilometres north of Zeerust and around 4.5 hours from Johannesburg and Pretoria, Madikwe Game Reserve lies close to the Botswana border and the edge of the Kalahari Desert. Once degraded farmland, the area was transformed in 1991 into a pioneering conservation initiative, with over 10,000 animals reintroduced in one of the largest wildlife translocation projects ever undertaken. Today, it stands as a thriving protected ecosystem and a symbol of ecological restoration and hope.
The reserve is home to around 66 large mammal species and nearly 300 bird species, set within a dramatic landscape of open savannahs, rocky outcrops, rolling woodlands, and distant mountain ranges, framed to the south by the Dwarsberg Mountains. This rich mosaic of habitats creates one of the most diverse wildlife environments in Africa — and one of the very few places where aardwolf, brown hyena, and spotted hyena can all be found within the same reserve.
Beyond the iconic Big Five, Madikwe Game Reserve is especially renowned for its healthy populations of endangered African wild dogs and cheetahs, as well as the elusive members of Africa’s “Secret Seven” — aardvark, African wild cat, civet, large-spotted genet, pangolin, porcupine, and serval. These rare sightings add an extra layer of excitement and exclusivity to every safari experience.
What truly sets Madikwe apart is its sense of space and solitude. With carefully managed visitor numbers, guests often enjoy vast stretches of pristine wilderness almost entirely to themselves. Safaris are led by expert professional guides in small groups, ensuring a highly personalised and immersive experience. Sightings are intentionally limited to a maximum of three vehicles, preserving the integrity of each encounter and allowing for a more intimate connection with the wildlife.
Madikwe also permits off-road tracking in select situations, enabling guests to follow significant sightings deep into the bush for truly unforgettable moments. Whether on a focused three-hour game drive or a full-day exploration, every safari reveals something new across its ever-changing landscapes.
From the arid Kalahari plains in the west to acacia-dotted savannahs, wooded riverine corridors, and rugged hillsides, the reserve’s shifting biomes create an extraordinary backdrop for wildlife. This dynamic environment supports an incredible diversity of flora and fauna, making every journey through Madikwe Game Reserve feel unique, wild, and profoundly rewarding — a rare safari destination where space, silence, and wildlife still reign supreme.
